Oracle Unified Directory (OUD) is a new directory product from Oracle. This post explains the steps to install and configure Oracle Unified Directory 11GR2 PS2 (11.1.2.2) as directory server.

Oracle Unified Directory server is capable of storage, proxy and replication. OUD is easy to install, configure, manage and monitor.

OUD comes with three main components.

Directory Server: Provides the LDAP functionality.

Proxy Server: Can be used for proxy LDAP requests.

Replication Server: Can be used for replication between OUD Servers or from ODSEE server.

Steps to Install and Configure Oracle Unified Directory 11GR2 PS2

Follow the below steps to install and configure Oracle Unified Directory 11gR2 PS2 (OUD) on Linux Server .

Steps to Install Oracle Unified Directory 11GR2 PS2

Install Java on the server

Set the JAVA_HOME environment variable

Download the OUD 11.1.2.2 software from here and copy it to the server.

Extract the OUD software zip file. Navigate to the Disk1 directory.

Execute the command runinstaller to start the installation process.

./runInstaller –jreLoc <JAVA_HOME>or ./runinstaller ( you need to enter the JAVA_HOME when prompted )

In the Welcome screen, click on Next to continue

In the next page, select the appropriate option and click on Next to continue. If you want to skip software updates, select that option and click on Next to continue.

In the next page, Installer will check the all per-requisites for installing OUD. In this step, it will check the parameters like physical memory, glib libraries, kernel parameters etc. If you get errors with any of these parameters then fix that issue and restart the installation process. Otherwise Click on Next to continue.

In the Next page, specify the installation location. Select the OUD base location Home and OUD Oracle Home. Click on Next to continue.

Installation summary will be displayed in the next page. Click on Save, if you want to save the response file. Click on Install to start the Installation process.

Save the installation details by clicking on Save. Click on Finish to close the window

Oracle Unified Directory 11GR2 PS2 Configuration Steps

Navigate to OUD Home directory and execute the command ./oud-setup to start the configuration

In the Welcome screen click next to continue.

In the server settings tab, enter the details like hostname, port, password etc and click on Next to continue.

In the next page, select the data Replication Option. Select the option and click on Next to continue

In the directory data page, enter the value for Directory Base DN

In the next page, specify the Oracle components with which the server integrates.

In the server Tuning page, provide the values for tuning OUD by selecting the values from Options drop down

If you select automatic OUD server will be tuned automatically based on the resources available on the server and its configuration.

Select the required option from the drop down and click on Next to continue

In the next page, go through the values you enter and click on Finish to start the configuration .

  1. How do you check existing OUD configuration correct or not? I am new to this OUD, well I wish to check the existing environment setup and wish to configure in new environment. Please advise on this. Thanks for wonderful article.

  2. Hi Pavan,

    You can check the below basic checks to see the OUD instance is working fine .

    Check the status of the OUD instance to see if its started properly.

    Also create some users , modify the user and search for the created users.
